What is Meningitis ACWY?

Meningococcal disease is a serious, life-threatening condition requiring urgent hospital care. It can lead to severe complications, including amputations, hearing loss, brain damage, and scarring.

Caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, the disease primarily affects infants, young children, teenagers, and young adults. The most common bacterial strains are groups A, B, C, W, and Y.

Meningococcal infection manifests as meningitis (inflammation of the brain’s lining) or septicaemia (blood poisoning), which can be fatal if not treated promptly. These conditions may also trigger sepsis, a severe immune response that can cause organ failure and death.

Meningitis ACWY Transmission & Prevention

Meningitis ACWY is caused by Neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that spreads through close contact with respiratory and throat secretions. This can occur via:

  1. Coughing and Sneezing – Droplets from an infected person’s nose or throat can spread the bacteria.
  2. Kissing and Sharing Utensils – Direct contact with saliva through kissing, sharing drinks, cutlery, or toothbrushes increases the risk.
  3. Living in Close Quarters – The bacteria thrive in crowded environments like university dormitories, military barracks, and large households.

Prolonged Exposure to Carriers – Some people carry Neisseria meningitidis in their throat without symptoms but can still transmit it to others.

The best way to prevent Meningitis is to get vaccinated.

  • Adolescents: All preteens aged 11 to 12 should receive a MenACWY vaccine, with a booster dose at 16 to maintain protection during peak risk years.
  • Individuals at Increased Risk: This includes people with certain medical conditions (e.g., HIV, asplenia), microbiologists exposed to Neisseria meningitidis, military recruits, and those traveling to regions where the disease is common.

Close contacts of someone with meningococcal disease should receive antibiotics to prevent infection.
Maintaining up-to-date vaccinations and seeking prompt medical advice if exposed are key steps in preventing Meningitis ACWY.

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the meningitis ACWY vaccine?

The MenACWY vaccine is an immunisation that protects against four strains of the meningococcal bacteria: serogroups A, C, W, and Y. These bacteria can cause serious infections such as meningitis (inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Vaccination helps prevent these life-threatening conditions.

MenACWY vaccine should be given at the age of 2 and also to teenagers in school years 9 or 10, typically between 13 and 15 years of age. Additionally, first-year university students (“freshers”) who haven’t been vaccinated are advised to get the MenACWY vaccine before starting their studies.

The MenACWY vaccine is usually injected in the upper arm. Most people only need one dose of the vaccine. However, individuals at occupational risk, such as laboratory workers handling Neisseria meningitidis, may require a booster dose every 5 years.

Currently, booster doses of the MenACWY conjugate vaccine are not routinely recommended for at-risk individuals. However, for those at ongoing occupational risk, booster doses may be administered every 5 years.

For Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, the vaccine requirements are:

  • Quadrivalent (ACYW) Polysaccharide Vaccine – Must be taken at least 10 days before arrival and should not exceed 3 years.
  • Quadrivalent (ACYW) Conjugate Vaccine – Must be taken within the last 5 years and at least 10 days prior to arrival.

Travellers and those at higher risk should consult their healthcare provider to ensure they meet vaccination requirements.

The MenACWY vaccine costs £55 per dose at the Clickheaton Pharmacy.

The protection provided by the Meningitis ACWY vaccine typically lasts about 5 years. After this period, a booster dose may be needed for continued immunity, especially for those who remain at high risk.
